I followed the custom clean upgrade option using the instructions on support.microsoft.com All went well until I tried to enter the product key. it failed multiple times, when I had 3 people validate the entry. I am upgrading to Win7 Ultimate from Vista Ultimate.
I received my Windows 7 today purchased from Amazon.com. It arrived in original heat shrink package with Microsoft "Genuine" seal. DVD has "Genuine" hologram. During the installation, the product key would not validate. We are using the product key in the package.
After multiple tries, I called Microsoft Technical Support. The case ID is 1115110076, and the initial call representative took the product code and told me it was Windows 7 Ultimate upgrade.
She then passed me to a MS support rep named Anchu. At first Anchu told me they would not support a product unless sold directly by Microsoft. Anchu put me on hold for several minutes as she "talked with someone else on what to do."
Anchu came back and said to me that I had an invalid counterfeit product key. She said Microsoft was so inundated with falsified and bad product keys that it will take 24-48 hours to have someone return my call. She said they would return my call eventually and try to get me a valid product key.
I called Amazon, reported the counterfeit product incident, and requested a refund. The customer service rep said all she could do is issue a refund or replacement. She could not guarantee the replacement would be valid. So I got a refund and am shipping back the product back to Amazon. Amazon is providing the shipping label.
I find it hard to believe that when you follow Microsoft's instructions, you can't use the product for days. What a screw up. I am shipping it back, and our company will cancel our upgrade and return it.
I told Microsoft and Amazon that I am also reporting this to the local police and to the FBI. I also reported this incident with these details via CNN news tips, and I submitted a help request on how to proceed with ClarkHoward.com.
As a followup- I contacted CNN and they are researching this expanding issue with Microsoft. Still doesn't explain why MS is so backed up with bad product keys that it takes 24-48 hours to get a return call.
